Now that’s a mountain

Back in the day, I used to lead a ski trip for teenagers out to the Saas Valley in Switzerland. Sometimes the locals would ask me if we had mountains in England? I never knew quite how to answer this. Given that the valley floor in Saas was 1650m, and thus at the bottom of the mountains we were still two thirds of a km higher than the peak of Snowdon! … I tended to just say, “No!”
Maybe the Swiss do a similar thing if they find themselves in the Karakoram mountain range wherein lies the mighty K2. I love this picture of its shadow:
