Kicking at the Darkness

kicking at the darkness.jpgHugely excited as a package has just arrived from Amazon with a book I have REALLY been looking forward to. Kicking at the Darkness “Bruce Cockburn and the Christian Imagination” is an analysis by Brian J Walsh of Cockburn’s music and lyrics, exploring (as one reviewer puts it) the life, work and spirituality of a “postmodern psalmist”
The title is lifted from a Cockburn song, one that is also quoted by Bono in the lyrics of a U2 track. The Cockburn Stanza though is:
“Nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight
You’ve got to kick at the darkness ’til it bleeds daylight”

Cockburns lyrics have inspired, challenged and moved me considerably over the years as well as providing a rich soundtrack to my life. I’ve been helped and humbled by his uncompromising honest spirituality and by his stands against injustice; a position that led one commentator to observe that:
“Cockburn is too radical for the christians and too christian for the radicals”
Yes, this is a book I am really looking forward to reading 🙂
