Reflective learning with 8 year olds

I was enjoying a chat with my youngest son last night and I referred to a film we’d watched recently to help explain a question that he was asking. This didn’t quite work as he countered with, “but you said films weren’t real, they were just pretend!”
At this point I made the mistake of trying to show him that although the film, the characters, and the events were not true, there were still things that could be learned or understood from the story.
“Oh,” he said, “You mean like that you can learn to fight from watching Star Wars!”
Entirely the opposite to the point I was trying to make but hey ho, it made me laugh!

(I now have to pay my daughter a £1 royalty fee for each blog post where she is mentioned, I’ll therefore hold on to those stories for one mega post!)

  1. Does this work for comments too. In other words if I complement your daughter on her scam will it cost you a £1?
If so I will be sure to ask how she is in a comment on every post you write.
Of course you can persuade me to stop that by paying me 50p for every post where I do not mention your daughter in a comment 🙂

  2. But you mentioned her in the post saying you would not mention her – so thats £1 for a start. And DaveW is right so thats another £2 (£1 for his comment and £1 for this). And if she pays me 50p for mentioning her, you have to pay her a £1 so we both win. Please pass this offer on. thank you.

  3. *laughing* and *eek*
oh hang on, it’s ok. In actual fact you’ve both mentioned her so I’ll get her to invoice you for the royalty fee, oh and I’ll need to be paid a small fee for hosting the web space for these business transactions 🙂

  4. Technically if you read the details of the arrangement as agreed above,
“I now have to pay my daughter a £1 royalty fee for each blog post where she is mentioned, I’ll therefore hold on to those stories for one mega post!”
Ian, you only have to pay her £1 for each POST not for each time.
I have to say this post does count as you have very clearly mention her but it should only cost you £1!

  5. Notice also YOU have to pay her, third parties cannot be involved in these transactions as it is an agreement purely between the poster and his daughter (phew that saved me a quid)
