We’re talking Tolkein

lotr.jpg I’m trying to put some stuff together around ‘calling’ and ‘journeying’ and was trying to find some clips from Lord of the Rings. Does anyone know whereabout it is that Gandalf says (in response to Frodo)
“All that we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us”
Also any other suggestions of relevent clips from LOTR (and whereabouts in the 3 films they are)?

  1. That quote is from ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ i think that it’s right near the end (i could be wrong). There’s loads of stuff in the first one particularly when they form the fellowship. Best line when Frodo is trying to take the ring across the river ‘I’m going alone’ and Sam relies ‘Yes i know, and i’m coming with you’

  2. The quote is from ‘fellowship of the ring’ during the sequence in the mines of moria, not long after they’ve entered and before the battle with the troll.

  3. Actually – at the beginning of the first film when Gandalf returns to Bag End – the hobbit hole and sticks the ring in the fire – that’s that one, but another good one is in the last film when Gandalf is talking to one of the hobbits in Minas Tirith and he talks about what comes after death and how they can face the darkness of the battle ahead…
There is some council in the ‘mines’ but I think that was lost in the film…
There is always good bits with the ents in the book – if you have the extended version of ‘The Two Ripoffs’ sorry, ‘towers’ you may find Treebeards comments about always making sure what they had to say was ‘worthwhile’…
and whilst you are poking around that film – Gandalf appears to Aragorn, Gimli and that elf at the borders of Fangorn Forest to tell them that their path now lies in a different direction then what they were following…
If you reeeaaallllyyy want more just ask as this is from the top of my head, well, ok I checked the bit about Frodo…

  4. Chapter 34, Extended edition = “Journey in the Dark”
    Full quotation is:
“So do all that come to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case you were also ‘meant’ to have it. And that is an encouraging thought. Eh – it’s that way.”

  5. tom bombadill also has some great quotes in the book, he didnt feature in the movies but i think treebeard got some of his lines.
