One Song to the tune of another

opdiva.jpg On Friday it's our Department Christmas bash. As it's more Advent than Christmas I need to steer a course somewhere between the two. We will have a bit of a sing-along around the piano and I want to do a fun, one song to the tune of another, type affair mixing Christmas Carols and other songs, hymns, ballads, whatever! So if anyone knows switchable tunes/words (that ACTUALLY fit) or if anyone sufficiently understands metre and the funny little black dots all over all those lines, I'd love to hear suggestions.

THANK YOU :-)

Isn't the point of the game that the word's *don't* fit?

In the ISIHAC version yes BUT if you want to have people singing together rather than acoustic anarchy then they HAVE to match :-)

Go West fits perfectly with Give Thanks!

I do mean to give you some suggestions but my brain is full at the moment. Sorry.

I reckon you can get Angels from the Realms of glory to the tune of Deck the Halls. God rest ye merry and It came upon a midnight clear seem to work too (with a slightly fiddly end). Without the chorus O Come all ye faithful and away in a manger work. Rudolph the red nosed reindeer is pretty funny to we three kings - not sure it works the other way round though! Hope that gets you going!

I know it`s not a carol but "Amazing grace" goes to the tune of "House of the rising sun"

'Amazing Grace' also goes to the tune of 'In the Jungle', although I can never get my worship leader to do it... you can replace the 'awimbawe's with 'Amazing Grace' too.

And Amazing Grace also works to Gilligan's Island. Just to take it from the sublime to the ridiculous! :)

You can be more adventurous than a hymn/Carol switch... I've no idea whether it would work at all, though I'm sure you could make it... but how about trying something like "Away in a Manger" to the "tune" ;) of Britney Spears "Hit me baby one more time"?

Far too late I'm afraid, but I'm currently listening to a great CD by an English folk trio* who are singing While Shepherds Watched... to the tune of Oh for a Thousand Tongues to Sing (Rockingham). It's a perfect fit, and sounds great.

And it's quite normal in many places to sing While Shepherds Watched... to the tune of On Ilkley Moor Baht 'At. Again, a good fit.

* in case you're wondering about the CD, it's A Garland of Carols by Coope, Boyes and Simpson. Top stuff; highly recommended.

Sorry, what was I thinking of? The tune is Lyngham, not Rockingham. Apologies.
