It seemed like a good idea at the time

Top Onmebus type youthworker bloke Simo(n) left a comment on the previous post. His comment contained the immortal (even, quintessential) youth work line,

‘It seemed like a good idea at the time … ‘

Here’s a whole new potential commentathon. Do leave examples of stuff that you’ve done that would naturally conclude with the youth work truism, ‘Well, It seemed like a good idea at the time!’

By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and Third, by experience, which is the bitterest.

  1. An illustration of how gossip can get out of hand was proposed by an upstanding member of the SU committee called “Julie”. “Mark” would claim to have received a phone call from a drunken Julie over the weekend, spread it around, all while making a video diary of “How I spread a rumour about Julie”.
It seemed like a good idea at the time. . . .
In fact a week later the rumour had escaped our school, went right round the town, all the YF’s and a good bit further afield.
Yes – it ended up being a great illustration but a lot of folks felt quite hurt at having been deceived and also it took “julie” quite a long time to clear her name of drunken behaviour . . .

  2. first one comes to mind is one of those ‘burn you sin’ experiences written on paper.. doing that with a cheap candle in a baking tin where the paper was to be dropped as well.. yeah, melted the candle spreading the oils of the candle throughout the pan, so you have a 20×10 glass pan filled with flame. put out by smothering, well intentioned youth brought in water to put on it shattering the glass pan.. smoke ensued.. contemplative worship not so contemplative..
“it seemed like a good idea at the time.”
